The drug maker has been accused of marketing it to sell a sex drug for impotence.
Viagra, made by Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company, has been the most-used drug on the market, and one of the most widely prescribed drugs among the United States men.
In January, a federal court in Brooklyn, N. Y., ordered the company to stop selling the Viagra drug.
The company said in a statement that it was "respectfully informed" by the Food and Drug Administration, and "has no plans to file a second application for a trademark in the future."
The FDA declined to comment.
Pfizer spokeswoman Cindy Eckert said the company's action "is the company's response to a very serious warning from the FDA that the drug is not approved for sex or for recreational use."
The FDA issued a warning on March 8, 2011, saying it had found that Viagra "is not appropriate for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction and/or impotence or erectile dysfunction caused by any other sexually transmitted disease or disorder."
A Pfizer spokeswoman said the FDA had not ruled out advertising Viagra for erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is sold over-the-counter by a pharmacy company called Super Specialty.
The FDA said in a statement that it was "reviewing the data for any claims made by this product and will consider any claims or information presented," including "any statements made about the products of Super Specialty."
Viagra was the most-prescribed drug in the United States in 2010, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Viagra is also marketed as a sexual stimulant, such as Sildenafil Citrate, and is often used as a second-line treatment for erectile dysfunction. The drug is sold over-the-counter by a pharmacy company called Mylan.
The FDA said in a statement that it had no information on the drug's labeling.
FDA spokeswoman Mary Anne Schumacher said the agency was "reviewing and evaluating all available information on this product, and will continue to evaluate the information available to us."
In an interview with CBS News, Schumacher said that the drug is the only FDA-approved drug that has been shown to work well. She said Viagra may work in a similar way for the men who take it.
The company said in a statement that "Viagra is the only FDA-approved drug for impotence and sexual dysfunction.
"This product has been approved by the FDA for use in adult men, and is approved for use in adult men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and/or impotence or erectile dysfunction caused by any other sexually transmitted disease or disorder. This product is not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and/or impotence."
The FDA said that it had not ruled out marketing Viagra for recreational use.
